Executive Editor Ryan McMaken started a new podcast called Loot and Lobby. Always and everywhere, the regime loots productive members of society to benefit corporate cronies, interest groups, and key voting blocs. The result is taxes, inflation, regulation, and war. The Loot and Lobby podcast takes a closer look at how this happens, and who’s on the losing side. Tune in here: mises.org/LL.

Connor O’Keeffe, Mises Institute Media and Content Producer, launched a new podcast titled Guns and Butter, a weekly commentary examining the big stories from the news through an Austro-libertarian lens. Listen here: mises.org/gb.

Senior Editor Daniella Bassi published her paper “Hispano-Indigenous Alliances and Missions, and Cacical Political Authority in La Florida, 1565–97” in the Journal of Libertarian Studies. Read here: https://doi.org/10.35297/001c.119005.

The Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics is now indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals. This achievement confirms the journal’s status as a serious publication where Austrian School scholars can publish their research and work toward tenure at their universities.

Mises Events

Mises Circle New Mexico: Living Free in an Unfree World

On September 14, the Mises Institute visited Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the first time for an event dedicated to living free in an unfree world. Ryan McMaken spoke on how private institutions can replace the state, and Peter Klein spoke on technology’s role in both state oppression and liberation from the state. Audio recordings of the talks are available at mises.org/NM2024. This event was sponsored by George and Sally Gundrey.

FreedomFest 2024

The Mises Institute was present with a booth at FreedomFest 2024 in Las Vegas. We gave away
hundreds of copies of Murray Rothbard’s What Has Government Done to Our Money? and Per
Bylund’s How to Think about the Economy. Hundreds of attendees stopped by our booth and we were ecstatic at how many of them were already familiar with the Mises Institute and our work.

Mises University 2024

Mises University was attended by 106 students from over seventy different schools and universities. Nineteen faculty members taught on topics ranging from price theory to entrepreneurship to revisionist history. Advanced sessions were held to challenge returning students, and two guest speakers, Drs. Ron Paul and Robert Malone made the week even more memorable. Photos are available at mises.org/MU24photos.

Mises Book Club

Dr. Karras Lambert led the summer Virtual Mises Book Club, focusing on Ludwig von Mises’s well-known book Economic Policy: Thoughts for Today and Tomorrow. The book club was attended by ten undergraduate students from various colleges and was sponsored by the Dean and Cam Williams Foundation.

Here’s what the students had to say about their experience:

  • “Reading and discussing Economic Policy: Thoughts for Today and Tomorrow was a joy. Ludwig von Mises is one of my biggest influences. Learning more about his ideas is always enlightening. The book club brought students together from across the world. I enjoyed discussing topics like interventionism with people from Brazil and elsewhere.” —Brae Sadler, Grove City College
  • “This club has provided me with a stronger foundation and more diverse perspectives in economics. As a person new to the ideas of Austrian economics, I appreciate the fundamentals that were so clearly illustrated in the book gifted so generously to us. Mises’s book on economic policy was especially foundational, and made the picture ‘come alive.’ I also appreciate the diverse perspectives brought up in our discussion groups.” —Layton VandeStroet, University of Lethbridge

Mises Students

The Universidad Autónoma de Chile published a press release highlighting Antonia Pino’s experience at Mises University 2024. Read here: www.uautonoma.cl

David Brady Jr., 2024 Mises Summer Intern and Apprentice, shared his experience from this summer:

  • “I can safely say that this has been one of the best summers of my life and one of the best opportunities afforded to me. Other students end up doing internships at businesses they do not care about, but this summer I was able to work somewhere where I felt my work was important and mattered.”

Over the summer, six Fellows in Residence researched topics ranging from Austrian price theory and economic calculation to monetary policy under the guidance of Drs. Salerno, Thornton, and Newman. The Fellows came from backgrounds in economics, law, and philosophy and from various American and international universities. Photos from our Fellows’ final research presentations can be viewed here: mises.org/Fellows24.

New Publication

Austrian Business Cycle Theory: An Introduction. Austrian economists argue that macroeconomics must be built on microeconomic foundations. Once we understand how the smaller parts of an economy work together we can begin to understand how the larger system works. In this book Dr. Paul Cwik constructs a model to illustrate macroeconomics from an Austrian perspective. Available at the Mises bookstore and on Amazon.

Mises Around the World

Mises Club Denmark held their second meeting on August 25.

The Mises Institute Korea funded Korean translations of Why Austrian Economics
Matters by Llewellyn H. Rockwell Jr., The Essential von Mises by Murray N. Rothbard, and The Ethics of Liberty by Murray N. Rothbard to help spread the message of liberty in South Korea. Mr. Allen Jeon, Mises Korea’s founder, graciously donated copies of the translated works to the Mises Institute’s library. He also sent us copies of the February 2022 and February 2024 issues of Mises Korea’s magazine The Austrian, which feature special interviews with Tho Bishop and Don Printz.
