A Force that Gives Meaning

A Force that Gives Meaning

LRC today links to the Rockford college graduation speech by Chris Hedges, today’s leading authority on the collectivism of war mania and its social, cultural, and political effects. I’ve been reading his wonderful book, War is a Force that Gives us Meaning, which offers great insight into why the president becomes so popular in war, why the government can get away with so many lies during war, why otherwise intelligent people become uncritically statist during war, and why the war is so easily forgotten within weeks after victory is declared. In any case, Hedges was heckled and shouted down, his microphone unplugged, during his speech.

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
