Going Underground

Going Underground

Richard Rahn is one of the few writers out there who keeps up with the underground economy and its size and scope – which is a fantastic thing to do because this is a leading indicator of the status of freedom itself. The larger the state, the larger the underground. A free society has no underground since there is no reason for people who are doing contractually licit things to hide from anyone. Here is his newest piece on the rise of the unbanked – people who will not use conventional banks and instead keep their savings in cash.

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
