Last year my wife came across Jennifer Government in the airport bookstore and had to pick it up after glancing over the back cover. The description from Amazon (I hope this link works): In Max Barry’s twisted, hilarious vision of the near future, the world is run by giant American corporations (except for a few deluded holdouts like the French); taxes are illegal; employees take the last names of the companies they work for; The Police and The NRA are publicly-traded security firms; the U.S. government may only investigate crimes if they can bill a citizen directly. It’s a free market paradise!
Just to warn you, the author is obviously horrified by the world he envisions; he’s no anarchist! And he’s also no economist: Some of the plot developments are silly. (If you want a novel with a more realistic treatment of anarchist institutions, I can refer you to a good one...) Nonetheless, the guy has a good imagination, and the story is a decent read. And besides, how many novels do you read that deal with this sort of thing?
