“He who espouses the institution of slavery,” wrote Mises in Liberalism, “never stops to reflect that he himself could be a slave.” This quotion comes to mind when slogging through the very long essay by David Brooks (”How to Reinvent the G.O.P.”) in the NYTimes Magazine, which ends with a stirring call for the government to rob late teens of critical years that could otherwise be used for productive endeavors in order that they can serve the political class.
