The Mises Institute receives correspondence from all over the world, many letters per day, and this one struck me as particularly inspiring:
I’m 77 years old, and I have practiced law 50 yrs. In the mid-70’s I was in a book store in its business section. I saw a book written by Percy Greaves, I picked it up and read the introduction by someone named Ludwig Von Mises. I was very impressed by the short introduction. I bought Mr. Greave’s book, and asked the clerk if there were any books written by Mises. Upon checking she said that there were two books, Human Action and The Theory of Money and Credit. I ordered both books.
The first book I read was Human Action. It was like a breath of fresh air. I was astonished that one man could be so brilliant and yet explain the entire libertarian theory in words that a simple lawyer could comprehend without having taken a course in economics. I then read The Theory of Money and Credit. It was a little more difficult, yet it had sufficient clarity of reason so that his thoughts could be grasped by a layman. I then ordered every book written by Mises that was published in English, and delighted in reading every one.
It is hard for me to comprehend that such a brilliant mind could be so scorned and ignored. I intended to get into the fight to spread his ideas, but illness prevented me so that I was barely able to work. I bought a computer in 2000, and wondered if were so scorned so that there would not even a web sight to present his views. I typed the words “Mises” into yahoo. When your web site popped up I was so delighted that tears also popped up in my eyes. What a treasure this site is, and what a PASSION for liberty it exhibits to the world.
I have told my children (and I am very serious in my statement) that Mises.org will determine the outcome of liberty for the human race. Once “intellectual” ignorance is penetrated I think the content of this site will eventually drown out all but the most hardened opposition. I go to other sites of freedom, but none contain the hard core, superior knowledge that is found in the writings of the treasury of Mises.org’s library, in written form, in audio and in visuals. The books, the articles and the essays will challenge and convince any intellectual who sincerely seeks out truth.
