Nameless Republican Socialists

The WSJ runs a good attack on the “Medicare Drug Folly,” which the editorial blasts: “We’re all for a prosperous old age, but it is hardly a step toward social justice for comfortable retirees to be further subsidized by working taxpayers with mortgages and kids...” But one name is missing: George W. Bush, who is the primary backer of the $400 billion bill. The WSJ refers only vaguely to “a Republican White House that seems to have forgotten that it has an obligation to more than its own re-election.” The editorial condemns cutting deals with lefties but also suggests a government-funded alternative to all-out prescription-drug socialism: “a drug discount card or a means-tested subsidy.”

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
