So Much for the Sales Tax

So Much for the Sales Tax

Big loss for sales tax supporters in Washington State, with a 1% increase for education (oh sure) rejected by 60% of voters. Other races around the country suggest that some smaller tax increase attempts passed and some failed. But the big story is what happened to GOP reps. who promoted the National Sales Tax.

As Kudlow notes, “Every Republican talking about it got whacked on the head – even though Jim DeMint recovered to win in South Carolina. But Americans don’t want an onerous sales-tax charge on every good and service they buy. It is very unpopular.”

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
