Wine and the Business Cycle

Wine and the Business Cycle

Sour Grapes in the Golden State (BBC): “California’s wine industry is weathering the worst downturn in the industry’s history after a string of bumper crops and a souring economy has led to plunging prices and financial problems for some vineyards. The seeds of the oversupply were sown in the 1990s when demand skyrocketed and a booming economy prompted growers to plant more vines. During the late 1990s, plantings soared by 45%. But timing is everything in the wine business, and those grapes are now maturing in an altogether different economic climate.”

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
