The title of the book may initially seem to be an exercise in hyperbole, but such is not the case. How Capitalism Saved America is indeed the untold history of our country. After a brief introduction and two very crucial introductory chapters on the nature of capitalism and the perpetrators of anticapitalismDiLorenzo takes us through nine chapters of American history—from the Pilgrims to the recent California energy “crisis”—and shows “how, from the very beginning, capitalism has been vital to America’s growth, and how excessive government interference in the economy has only exacerbated economic problems and stifled growth.” Although the book is written chronologically, any of these nine chapters can be read independently. However, only one of them is necessary to see that the book’s title is not an overstatement.

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
