Burn the House, Save the Nails

Burn the House, Save the Nails

Along the same lines, Rothbard mentions in passing in What Has Government Done to Our Money that nails were once used for currency. Rothbard mentions Scotland. But in the early days on the American frontier too, nails were so scarce that people often would burn down a home before they moved on.  The reason was so they could collect the nails to be reused. In our modern era, we might find it hard to believe that nails were this scarce, but a couple hundred years ago, that was the case.

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
