Gouging and Looting

Gouging and Looting

From MarginalRev comes a link to this  very interesting story on a convenience-store owner who was accused of gouging during Hurricane Isabel. “What I did was what the state and federal governments couldn’t do: Stay open and deliver services to the general public.” (Cowen concludes from the story that people hate flexible prices but this sense is probably driven by the media hysteria about gouging, which in turn is driven by government’s desire for any excuse to pummel free enterprise)

Also, here is an example of real gouging: “Welcome to Lush Zimbabwe. Your Wallet, Please!“ (NYT)

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
