Gouging or Merely Allocating?

Gouging or Merely Allocating?

According to  this story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the price of flu vaccines has more than quintupled. So what’s the problem?  Entrepreneurs are allocating resources to the uses that bring people the greatest benefit. They should be applauded for doing so, right? But this isn’t the case. According to several sources quoted in the article, this is an example of evil price-gouging—drug companies and middlemen are raking in windfall profits while governments and citizens “are being taken advantage of.”  Look for a government near you to take swift and decisive action soon—as if there wen’t shortage enough already.

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
