Here is a report on my new teaching positionI am in the Economics and Finance Department in the School of Business and Economics, College of Charleston (founded 1770) Charleston, South Carolina. There are 13 people in the department including myself. Nine of the 13 are economists. It is a great opportunity for me. Great emphasis and resources are dedicated to research. There new president is a former Wall Street financier, who became the Dean of the School of Business at UVA, and then the President of Babson College. He is in his third year here and has some amazing goals. While the rest of the state schools have been cutting back he has been weening the budget off of state support and finding other avenues of funding. He has a fourth-century initiative in place which among other things caps enrollment at 10,000 students and adds 50 new positions over this year and next. The school of business recieved 6 of the 25 for this year. Econ and finance received two. The school of business faculty really seem to like him and I like him too. The economics major is now the largest in the school of business and economics with around 80 majors and is growing. We are the second largest department in the school. I have been impressed with my new colleagues, the students, and the campus, and I’m very excited about the opportunity. [See the Calcagno interview in the AEN]
