Time-Inconsistent Behavior

How Much Does it Cost Not to Go to the Gym? (NYTimes): “Economists describe this as ‘time-inconsistent behavior.’ When the benefits of an action are far in the future and the costs are immediate, people do not give the benefits much weight. Tomorrow’s buff body loses out to the dread of today’s workout, and a reduced risk of cancer is obscured by the pleasure of a cigarette. When the costs are in the future and the benefits immediate, as when the purchase of a new BlackBerry requires only the flick of a credit card, the benefits eclipse the costs.” Posted by Jeffrey Tucker

What is the Mises Institute?

The Mises Institute is a non-profit organization that exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian School of economics, individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard.

Non-political, non-partisan, and non-PC, we advocate a radical shift in the intellectual climate, away from statism and toward a private property order. We believe that our foundational ideas are of permanent value, and oppose all efforts at compromise, sellout, and amalgamation of these ideas with fashionable political, cultural, and social doctrines inimical to their spirit.
